The best variety of Cutch is common to most parts of India and Burma. The extract is made by steeping the wood in hot water until the liquid becomes syrupy. The thick liquid is cooled, pressed, then cut into cubes and ground into a powder for dyeing. Cutch will dye all fibres well. When used with an alum mordant Cutch yields yellow-brown to red-brown colours. Cutch with iron gives blackened browns. Using a sodium carbonate rinse will redden any Cutch colour.
