Steeped in history, this plant was for many years a staple of the European dye industry. Used until as late as the 1930's as a dye to give colourfastness to police uniforms, the gorgeous blues are extracted using the same vat-dyeing method as for indigo, although the blues obtained tend to be less intense than with indigo.
