Steeped in history, this plant was for many years a staple of the European dye industry. Used until as late as the 1930's as a dye to give colourfastness to police uniforms, the gorgeous blues are extracted using the same vat-dyeing method as for indigo, although the blues obtained tend to be less intense than with indigo. Can be used to overdye yellows for luscious greens, or use with reds for purples and violets.
