All about... alternative cast-ons

We all love our favourite cast-on but is it always right for the job?

Often an unsuitable cast-on isn't apparent until after a garment is finished. When we learn to knit we are normally only taught one or two cast-on methods and we then blame ourselves for our overtight or horribly baggy cast-on row without realising that other methods exist which could solve the problem. To make things worse, patterns do not always indicate which cast-on method to use.

Help is at hand! Debbie's latest article in the February 2007 issue of Simply Knitting magazine (in the shops now!) shows you more ways to start off. Part one gives simple guidelines on how to choose a particular cast-on and covers long-tailed, knit and alternate cable cast-ons as well as some top tips to improve your edges.

Don't miss part two next month!

Simply Knitting magazine is published by Future Publishing and is available at all good newsagents. If you would like to subscribe to this magazine please call 0870 837 4722 or go to www.myfavouritemagazines.co.uk
