All about...Hand dyeing: Part One - Kool Aid |
||
Several myths abound about hand dyeing. First, that it is difficult and messy, and second, that you need to be artisitic to do it. Not so! Even if you are an absolute beginner, dyeing is very simple - it's quick, fun and the results are both unqiue and stunning. What's more, it doesn't need any specialist equipment, so you can do it at home in your own kitchen. The April issue of Simply Knitting magazine is in the shops now and contains part one of a brand new three part series on hand dyeing by Debbie Tomkies. Part One concentrates on hand dyeing using Kool Aid, an American fruit flavour soft drink which comes in powder form. The article also explains how to substitute normal food colours for the Kool Aid. The article covers how to prepare your yarn for hand dyeing, how to apply the dye and how to fix the dye to make it colour fast. Techniques are included to achieve both single colour and multi-coloured or "rainbow" dyeing effects. Part two of the series will cover hand dyeing using chemical dyes such as Procion MX and part three will cover natural dyeing, including the easy to use Earthues natural dye extracts. Simply Knitting magazine is published by Future Publishing and is available at all good newsagents.
