All about...Hand dyeing: Part Three |
|
|
The final part of Debbie's three part series on hand dyeing is in the May issue of Simply Knitting magazine which is in the shops now. Debbie covered dyeing natural fibres with man-made colourants in the two previous parts of this hand dyeing series. This month she takes a lead from Mother Nature and looks at how to dye yarns with natural items. As well as explaining how to use the plants and berries from your garden or allotment Debbie introduces Earthues natural dye extracts. Natural dyes may be fixed (or, more properly, "mordanted") by using different fixing chemicals ("mordants") to produce new colours. Even more shades can be created by combining different mordants. Because of this you can have lots of fun with just a single dyestuff and a range of mordants or mordanting methods. With tips and answers to the common questions on natural dyeing Debbie even explains how to use your left over dye "exhaust" to produce paler shades of colour. For more information on our Earthues dyes, mordants and dye starter kits please click here Part One of the series covered dyeing with Kool Aid and Part Two explained techniques for using Procion dyes. Simply Knitting magazine is published by Future Publishing and is available at all good newsagents.
