Ancient worlds – spinning at the Museum

Visitors to Manchester Museum in February may have seen lots of children sporting brightly-coloured bracelets and hair braids or chattering about things we make clothes from like wool, bamboo and flax.

Over the course of a day during the February school half term Debbie gave upwards of 100 enthusiastic children the chance to have a go at handspinning and each one made their very own handspun yarn to take home.

Adults and children alike took part in the guess the fibre challenge with lots of looks of disbelief and surprise when beautifully soft fibres turned out to be made from soy beans, worms (silkworms), nettles and even milk!

The day was part of Manchester Museum's fantastic programme of free family activities and it was a real pleasure to be part of the half term Ancient Worlds special events.

A big thank you to Anna and Vicky for inviting Debbie to take part and for a great day! There's always something fun happening at the Museum and the Whitworth Gallery - check out the great programme of forthcoming events by clicking here
