Kit 6 - Cotton carrier bag |
||
I enjoy making bags as you can always find a use for them. This bag is a good size and could be used to carry around your "works in progress" (or UFO’s as they are referred to in my Spinning Guild, being "Un-Finished Objects"!). It would also make a great shopper for days when you need to carry more than just a lipstick and a credit card. I've used cotton for the bag as it doesn’t stretch, is soft and pleasant to handle and can easily be washed without risk of pilling or felting. The addition of a lining gives the bag more shape and helps to prevent small items like safety pins and crochet hooks from falling through any holes between the stitches. The Turkish closure is based on the saddlebags traditionally used by Turkish and Afghan nomadic peoples. These beautiful hand-woven, often hand-dyed, bags are highly valued and were used historically to carry the family’s belongings by camel from one encampment to another. These days, sadly fewer and fewer families continue their nomadic lifestyle. However, the bags may still be found, although often they have been either cut up and reused to make cushions for sale to tourists, or are used as panniers slung over the back of mopeds and small motorbikes! The bag strap is designed to allow it to be worn across the shoulders. It can easily be adjusted to make a length to suit your needs by working more or fewer rows, until you reach your desired length. This kit will make a bag 28cm (11ins) wide, 37cm (14½ins) tall and 8cm (3¼ ins) deep with a strap length of approximately 90cm (35½ins). The kit includes:
