About our procion dyes

Here at DT Craft & Design we have carefully selected our Hue & Dye procion dyes for reliability, richness and vibrancy of colour, ease of use and value.

Debbie has been a hand-dyer for over 25 years and in that time has honed our dye range to give a huge palette of colours using the available range. From intense, deep shades through to delicate pastels; pure spectrum colours to soft, muted shades – the world is your rainbow!

Our procion dyes are fibre reactive, ‘MX’ dyes. They provide an excellent balance between colour range, adaptability to different fibres, colour, wash and lightfastness. As a bi-functional dye procion dyes are very easy to use.

We supply our dyes in sturdy, re-usable screw-top pots. The wide neck allows easy access and ensures minimal waste.

What can I dye?

You can use Hue & Dye procion dyes on almost any natural fibre, including protein (animal) fibres like wool, alpaca and silk. They will also work on cellulose (plant) fibres like cotton, hemp, linen.

How can my dyes be used?

You can use procion mx dyes for a wide range of techniques:

  • Ombres and fade
  • dip dye
  • veil dyeing
  • speckles
  • handpaints
  • solid colour (immersion)
  • low-water immersion and more!

Procion dyes can also be thickened with manutex for printing and are the ‘go-to’ dyes for tie-dye, shibori and resist dyeing.

How much dye should I use?

We recommend using the following quantities:

  • 0.1g dye is perfect for pastels
  • 1g dye will dye 100g dry weight of fibre (yarn/fleece etc.) to a medium colour
  • 2-4g dye is ideal for deeper shades (4g for black and the richest reds).

What else will I need?

Fixer (to make the dyes colour and washfast:

  • For animal fibres, you will need a mild acid and heat to fix the dyes (we use citric acid but you can also use vinegar). We suggest 10g citric acid (or 100ml vinegar) per 100g dry weight of yarn/fibre. You can heat in the microwave, oven, on the hob, in a steamer, bain marie or crockpot, slow cooker or even solar dyeing. Just make sure any pots and utensils are kept for dyeing use.
  • Plant fibres don’t need to be heated. Simply pre-soak in a sodium carbonate (also called ‘soda ash’) solution and leave covered for 4-24 hours (so they stay damp) before rinsing. We suggest 25g sodium carbonate per 100g dry weight of fibre/fabric/yarn.

Equipment:

  • A pan/dish/tray to dye your yarns in or clingfilm if microwave dyeing or steaming
  • For heating, you can use the stovetop, hob, oven, microwave, crockpot (slow cooker) or steamer
  • Basic utensils like stirring spoons
  • Beakers for mixing dyes
  • Covers for surfaces

(Please note: Any pans, beakers etc. shouldn’t be used for cooking if they have been used for dyeing)

Dyeing with our procion dyes is fun, easy and satisfying and you can produce amazing results from your very first skein, t-shirt or tote in just a couple of hours!

We supply our dyes with a simple instruction leaflet but please ask if you have any questions!
