Procion Dyes (fibre reactive dyes)

About our procion dyes

Our Hue & Dye procion dyes are a perfect choice for your first dyes. Versatile, super-easy to use, reliable and good value, procion mx dyes produce fabulous rich and vibrant results.

Debbie has been a hand-dyer for over 25 years and in that time has honed our dye range to give a huge palette of colours using the available range. From intense, deep shades through to delicate pastels; pure spectrum colours to soft, muted shades – the world is your rainbow!

You can use Hue & Dye procion dyes for a wide range of techniques: Ombres and fades; dip; veil; speckle; handpaints; solid colour (immersion); low-water immersion and more! They can also be thickened with manutex, making them perfect for screenprinting and block print. The classic dye of choice for tie dye, spritz-dyeing, ‘airbrushing’, stencilling and so much more!

Our procion dyes are a bi-functional dye. This means they can be used on both plant (cellulose) and animal (protein) fibres to provide an excellent colour range, adaptability to different fibres, colour, wash and lightfastness.

They are very easy to use requiring only heat and a mild acid to fix (we use citric acid but you can also use vinegar). You can heat in the microwave, oven, on the hob, in a steamer, bain marie or crockpot, slow cooker or even solar dyeing. Just make sure any pots and utensils are kept for dyeing use.

For plant fibres like cotton, linen, hemp, no need to use heat and swap the citric acid/vinegar for a mild alkali. We use sodium carbonate.

Dyeing with procion mx dyes is fun, easy and satisfying and you can be producing amazing results from your very first skein or tee in just a couple of hours!

Our recommended quantities are:

  • 1g dye will dye 100g dry weight of fibre (yarn/fleece/fabric etc.) to a medium colour
  • 0.1g dye is perfect for pastels
  • 2-4g dye is ideal for deeper shades (4g for black and the richest reds)
  • Use 25g citric acid (or 100ml vinegar) per 100g dry weight of fibre
